Understand your options before you book anything
Veneers and Invisalign both address gaps and spacing, but they work in completely different ways. One covers the problem; the other solves it. Understanding the difference protects you from choosing based on marketing rather than your actual situation.

What to do before your first consultation
Most people walk into a cosmetic dentistry consultation underprepared. The dentist recommends a treatment, quotes a price, and the patient agrees without the context to evaluate the recommendation. These steps change that.
Book at least two consultations
Cosmetic dentistry is elective. A second opinion from a different practice costs nothing and gives you a comparison baseline on both the recommended treatment and the price. If two dentists recommend different options, ask each why the other's recommendation is wrong.
Questions to ask at your consultation
- Is this gap caused by spacing only, or is there an underlying bite issue?
- Am I a candidate for Invisalign Lite, or do I need full treatment — and why?
- For veneers: how much tooth reduction is required for my specific teeth?
- What happens to my teeth in 15 years when veneers need replacing?
- Do you have before/after photos of patients with gaps similar to mine?
- What is included in the quoted price, and what triggers additional costs?
- Do you offer a payment plan, and what are the terms?
- What is your experience specifically with this procedure for spacing issues?
Red flags in a consultation
- Dentist recommends veneers without assessing your bite
- Quote includes "full set" veneers when you only have a small gap
- No before/after photos available for comparable cases
- Pressure to book or pay a deposit at the first consultation
- Invisalign quoted without a full digital scan or X-rays
- Composite veneers presented as equivalent to porcelain
- No written quote provided — verbal pricing only

Financing — what to check
- Many clinics offer 0% interest plans for 12–24 months — confirm the terms in writing
- BNPL services (Afterpay, Zip) are sometimes offered — check if interest applies after the 0% period
- Some health funds cover a portion of Invisalign under orthodontic extras — check your policy before quoting
- Veneers are rarely covered by health insurance as they are classified as cosmetic
What to expect during treatment
Knowing the process in advance prevents surprises and helps you evaluate whether what's happening at each appointment is normal.
The Invisalign process — step by step
- Consultation + scan: Digital 3D scan of your teeth. No impressions. Takes 20–30 mins. You'll see a simulated result before committing.
- Treatment plan review: Dentist presents the plan. Number of trays, estimated duration, cost confirmed. Ask to see the simulation before approving.
- Attachments placed: Small tooth-coloured bumps bonded to teeth to help aligners grip. Normal. Temporary.
- Aligner series begins: New tray set every 1–2 weeks. Mild pressure for 2–3 days with each new set is normal.
- Check-ups every 6–8 weeks: Dentist assesses progress. Refinements added if needed.
- Refinements (if needed): A new set of trays to finish the result. Common and included in most quotes — confirm this upfront.
- Retainer fitted: Fixed or removable retainer after treatment. This is permanent — your teeth will shift back without it.
The veneers process — step by step
- Consultation + mock-up: Digital or physical mock-up shows the final result. Ask to see this before approving any tooth reduction.
- Tooth preparation: Dentist removes 0.3–0.7mm of enamel from the front of each tooth. This is permanent and irreversible.
- Temporaries placed: Temporary veneers while your custom veneers are made in the lab (1–2 weeks). Teeth will be sensitive — this is normal.
- Final veneers bonded: Your permanent porcelain veneers are checked for fit and colour before bonding. Ask to see them before they're cemented.
- Review appointment: 1–2 weeks later to check bite and comfort.
Aftercare, longevity, and what comes next
Both treatments require ongoing maintenance. Understanding what this looks like before you start prevents surprises and protects your investment.
Invisalign aftercare
- Retainer for life: Without a retainer, your teeth will move back. This is not optional.
- Fixed retainer option: A wire bonded behind your front teeth. Set-and-forget — ask your dentist if this suits your case.
- Removable retainer: Worn every night. Replace every 1–2 years (approx. $200–$400 per set).
- No special diet required — aligners are removed for eating and cleaning.
- 6-monthly dental checks as normal — no additional ongoing cost for the alignment itself.
Veneer aftercare
- Avoid hard foods: Ice, hard lollies, biting fingernails — all increase chip risk.
- Night guard if you grind: Grinding (bruxism) is the leading cause of veneer failure. A night guard ($300–$600) is essential if you grind.
- No whitening products: Veneers don't respond to whitening. Only your natural teeth will lighten, creating colour mismatch.
- Replacement planned at 10–15 years: Budget for this. The tooth structure underneath is already reduced — replacement is not optional.
- Regular cleans every 6 months: Gum health around veneers requires consistent hygiene.
How to evaluate your result
- Compare against the mock-up or simulation you approved — is the shape and spacing what you agreed to?
- Check colour match in natural daylight, not just dental office lighting
- Bite test: no single tooth should take all the pressure when you close
- If something feels wrong in the first 2 weeks, raise it immediately — adjustments are straightforward early, difficult later
Veneers: treatment cost recurs at 10–15 years. Add a night guard if needed. Total 20-year cost is approximately 2–2.5x the initial treatment price. Factor this into your decision.
If something goes wrong
- Veneer chips or debonds: Contact your dentist within 48 hours. Most practices have a warranty period (ask before treatment — typically 1–2 years).
- Invisalign not tracking: Stop wearing the current tray and contact your provider. Continuing with a poorly fitting tray can cause unintended movement.
- Sensitivity after veneers persists beyond 4 weeks: Return to your dentist — this can indicate a bite issue or inadequate bonding.
- Dissatisfied with the result: Raise it before the temporaries are removed (veneers) or before refinements are approved (Invisalign). After permanents are bonded or final trays completed, remedies become costly.
